Chair Yoga can be fun and challenging. Chair Yoga offers an alternative to mat yoga that can be just as challenging. Let's face it, not everyone feels comfortable sitting on the floor. That alone can make yoga inaccessible. However, many postures that are done sitting on the floor can also be done sitting in a chair with better alignment, less pain and discomfort. Chair Yoga also uses chairs for standing. Using a chair for standing poses offers increased stability and often results in better alignment for students who have joint and muscle stiffness.
In this 2 - part, workshop we'll explore Chair Yoga basics in the morning and Chair Yoga flows in the afternoon, including the Sun and Moon salutations. Sign up for morning or afternoon or both. Many of these modifications can be brought into mainstream classes for students who have specific limitations. Teachers who develop skill with asana modification and adaptive poses are in high demand for teaching special needs populations including a growing segment of the population - seniors and retirees.
This workshop meets the Yoga Alliance standard for 6 hours of Continuing Education.

Each child is born into the world as a unique expression of cosmic energy. It’s through the senses that we experience the world. Children with special needs often experience the world through disordered senses. The physical world offers obstacles and challenges for children with autism or down syndrome or cerebral palsy or many other conditions that make their childhood experiences different from those of typical children.
Yoga offers whole person wellness tools that support children and the families of children with special needs.
In this workshop, we’ll explore tools and techniques for teaching yoga to children with a variety of individual needs including structure and flexibility, sequencing, social interaction, and FUN!
Welcoming yoga teachers and parents of sensational children. Please do not bring children to this workshop.

Using a chair for standing poses offers increased stability and often results in better alignment for students who have joint and muscle stiffness.

Saturday, August 14, 1:00 - 6:30 p.m. Teaching Yoga to Adults with Special Needs
Stiram sukham asanam - a steady and comfortable posture. This concept integral to the practice of yoga poses. It also applies to being steady and comfortable with all aspects of our lives.
Teaching yoga to people who have special needs can be incredibly rewarding, humbling, and heartfelt - and a challenge for yoga teachers who are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with their abilities to teach students who have physical challenges or serious health conditions.
This workshop includes discussion and experiences so that teachers can explore various ways to adapt to the needs of students. Building on on Chair Yoga for Every Body, this workshop offers a developmental approach to teaching some common and not so common asanas, so that students may learn how to modify poses for their body so that steady and comfortable may be possible, in mainstream and specialty classes.
Integrating adaptive asana practices into traditional and specialty classes is an art that can facilitate the transformative power of yoga by creating a safe and inviting environment for all students. Teachers who develop this skill are in high demand for community yoga classes as well as special-needs populations which will be addressed.
Welcoming yoga teachers and motivated students.
