Welcoming Students who want to learn more about Yoga psychology and the philosophies of Yoga
and Yoga Teachers who want to add tools to their teaching toolbox.
Saturday, October 24, 2009
(rescheduled from 9/26) 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 2 - 5:00 p.m. Preston, Connecticut
Yoga, the world’s oldest holistic system of self-development, seeks to integrate mind, body and spirit. How? Begin where the student is now. What is commonly thought of as Yoga in this country is really a set of practices that has the potential to open doorways toward greater awareness and knowledge of our true nature, which is bliss.
Yoga is not merely a sophisticated exercise system. “Yoga is a spiritual system with a physical component, not a physical system with a spiritual component.” (Swami J) The word Yoga comes from the root word “yuj” and means union or to yoke together. Unite or yoke together what? Yoga is the union of the big Self (macrocosm) with the little self (microcosm.) “Yoga is the recognition of a pre-existing union.” (Swami J) The purpose of doing the practices is to remember our true nature, which is bliss.
The 5 Kosha model describes an organized process of evolution from Self to matter and provides a framework for self-understanding and personal transformation. “We are not just this body but the embodied spirit itself.” (Amrit Desai)
The 7 Chakra model describes as system of human development that began prior to our birth and continues after death when we merge with universal consciousness. Understanding the chakra system can provide insights into the nature and location of imbalances in the bodies and into appropriate practices to bring the whole system into balance.
Mudras, in this case, hand mudras, are “gestures that seal specific experiences within the body, mind and spirit." (LePage)
In this workshop, we’ll explore the concepts of the 5 Koshas, the 7Chakras, the use of hand Mudras and how to incorporate them into our lives and into our practice. The workshop combines lecture format with asana and other experiences to move your mind and your body.
Bring your yoga gear, a light lunch and writing materials. Herbal teas will be provided.
