Are you interested in increasing your toolbox and confidence teaching yoga safely to students:

• who are recovering from illness or injury,

• have limited flexibility and/or strength,

• are managing chronic health conditions,

• don't want to get on or off the floor, or

• who are in a large group at an event, workplace settings or conference?

If you’re like many of the yoga teachers who have completed the Yoga Heals Us certification program, you care deeply for your students. You want to teach with authenticity and clarity and be able to adapt yoga for people you serve. It’s important to you to teach safely using empowering language, rather than just relying on fear-based cues telling students what not to do.

This program has 4 interactive sessions on Zoom in real time for you to learn, ask questions, share ideas and practice with your peers to integrate what you are learning to build upon what you know.

Offer chair yoga classes with confidence and know how to adapt your classes for students who are recovering from an injury or illness, groups at conferences or events, older adults who have limitations, and those who are not keen on getting onto and up from the floor.

This program provides an up-to-date research on common health conditions including conditions of the spine including osteoporosis, joint conditions and joint replacements.

Gain Mastery Learning:

  • 3 levels of chair yoga poses so you can adapt the practice to the needs of your students

    • Level 1 Chair Yoga—seated poses using one or two chairs.

    • Level 2 Chair Yoga—seated and standing poses using one or two chairs.

    • Level 3 Chair Yoga—modifications for mat postures as well as standing poses using the chair for balance, support, and improved alignment. Level 3 Chair Yoga can be used in regular yoga classes to practice challenging poses such as Balancing Half Moon.

  • Joint warm-ups for the whole body

  • Seated and standing sun salutation variations using the chair

  • How to adjust the chair to support balance in standing poses

  • Fall Prevention tips and sequence to get up from the floor for someone who has fallen

  • Options for relaxation in a chair including supported restorative positions, Mudra meditations, and guided Yoga Nidra

  • Considerations for leading students with common conditions such as joint replacements and pain, Osteoporosis, Sciatica, spinal conditions, arthritis, Spinal Stenosis, etc.

  • The neuroscience of pain and how yoga can help people who are managing chronic pain.

As part of the training, you’ll receive a 60+ page manual (PDF) with photographs of variations of seated and standing yoga poses using 1 or 2 chairs. You’ll also have free access to live Chair Yoga classes on Zoom, recordings and receive additional recorded classes led by Karen.

Pre-requisite:

  • 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification (If you are a health professional with appropriate qualifications please contact Susanne.)

  • Yoga teachers in training with Yoga Alliance registered 200 hr YTT

Note From Susanne

This program was developed by Karen O’Donnell Clarke over the course of two decades working with students with multiple sclerosis, cancer, those recovering from surgery, seniors, and individuals needing a gentle, adaptive approach to yoga. When Karen asked me to take over the training I was deeply honored to continue the legacy of my friend and colleague since the 1990s. Karen and I began from the same foundational teachings and a passion for making yoga accessible to all students as you can see in our bios here.

The classes are small with many opportunities to ask questions and learn in a comfortable, safe environment. Breakout sessions allow for practice teaching, discussing ideas and connection. â€‹In addition to the recordings of our training sessions and chair yoga classes with me, you’ll receive access to recordings of chair yoga classes with Karen. If there’s anything I can do to help you in your teaching journey, just let me know. I look forward to serving you. —Susanne

What Yoga Heals Us Certified Chair Yoga Teachers Say

Susanne has an extensive amount of knowledge and experience in yoga and Ayurveda and her teachings opened my mind to new ways of thinking. The training was very thought-out. The material felt relevant and fresh.

One of my favorite parts about the training was that Susanne always integrated during the power point presentations the theoretical with the practical and encouraged us to explore in real time.

I am grateful that Susanne honored Karen’s beautiful teachings—it felt like having two angels in the room.       —Angela
